Breakthrough at the Gap

Table setup - 2 battles running. Fulda was the closer set up
Initial Russian Advance. Beginning of US player 1st turn, Abrams came on as reinforcements
T64s conduct suicide charge against the M1s

In the early dawn hours of August 13th advanced elements of the Soviet 8th Guards Army smash into the lead elements of the 11th ACR in the Fulda Gap, near Bad Hersfeld FRG.
The initial push is made by BMP-2 recon units probing for a gap in the US lines. These are closely followed by more BMPs and T64 tanks. The 11th ACR troopers put up a good fight but were unable to hold back the red swarm who were able to capture their assigned objectives with the sun peaking above the horizon behind them.

The US team started with half their forces in reserves. On the board were 3 Mech Inf units and their M109s.

The Soviets had all 99 points on board, 3 BMP units, 1 T64 unit, 2 Recce units, 2 Gaskin AA units, and one ZSU23-4 unit.

The terrain did not support much of a spearhead deployment for the soviets. The US deployment zone extended 16" from their board edge, plus a minimum of 8" didn't leave much room for deployment. With out concealing terrain, majority of the Soviet forces were limited to just a 16' deployment zone.
One Company of Soviet Infantry dismounted on the Objective in their deployment zone. Their BMPs with one Recce and One Gaskin unit attempted to rush the US Infantry dug in on our left flank, while the rest the Objective in the center of the US zone. The only unit relatively close to this OBJ was the M109 battery. The Soviet commander was hoping for a quick victory with a successful blitz move, followed up by a dash they were on the OBJ.
But the US rolled successfully for reinforcements, and even luckier, they appeared in the center of his deployment zone, less then 12' from the OBJ.
The Soviet commander surrounded the OBJ with vehicles and was able to build a wall of wrecks that prevented the US from contesting with additional units. During the 4th turn the Soviet commander was able to bail the M109 that was contesting the obj and the battle ended.

So…your force is comprised of White Russians, Comrade? We may have to speak to the Commissar about this…

btw- nice report. I enjoyed it 🙂

  • General POTUS says:

You know things are desperate when the Yankees need to break out the WWII vintage M7 Priests from the museum to provide additional fire support…. 😀

  • Tgunner91 says:

Yikes! BMP spam! I´ve seen the wall of wrecks too. It is pretty funny that the Pack players can sacrifice vehicles to create their own ¨cover¨ when they need it. I know they
don´t do it on purpose. It´s just them taking advantage of battlefield conditions. But it can be really effective.

  • Hunts says:

Nice report. Even throwing in a video from the good old days when I was there.

  • Red Alert says:

That was a tight game, I find the mission really favors the attacker.

I am sure that is fine in the long run. I suspect they are easy on the Soviets in turn 1 for a reason.

A lot of my vehicles are still un-primed metal molds

    Pleasent reading 🙂
Reagarding your T-72 tanks, are they white because you are going for a winter camoflauge?
It was a nice table and I enjoy watching huge tank battles! Keep ’em coming!

  • Robert Burnham says:

Nice report. That is a tough mission for a mech force to have — having to defend a large area with only half of its strength initially.

  • K. Meyer says:

Hard fought all around…..that mission is not an easy one especially when half your points are on the board only! Looking forward to seeing more battles.

    Cheers,
