Mission: Quick Mission - Bypass - 55 pts

Initially my plan was to play in the Hannover sector today with Tomas, but alas, I was to be given a new section to invade instead after NATO's new front opening up. So I asked if he was okey changing it for Leipzig and he agreed.

So this is what I was afraid of all along.
I will personally put all my efforts into regaining Leipzig and every game, if my opponent is willing, will be played towards this end!
Leipzig will be liberated by the Kommendant!

Yellow star = Destroyed
Red star, yellow border = Bailed Out
Brown star, yellow border = Bogged Down

To set the mood

Kommendant Baron slammed his fists down onto the table and sent his coffe mug flying of the table along with some other documents as he continued reading the transcript he had just recieved.

He had been a fool to believe that the Soviets would even consider thinking that the NATO forces would have enough forces to open up a new front. What made things worse was that it had opened up into Leipzig where he was preparing his forces, he was ready but also worried. His country was now under attack. Not the Warsaw Pact, but his part of Germany. The Germany where his family lived and the family of many other soldiers within the army. This was not good at all for morale.

He grabbed the piece of paper and tore it up in an act of anger as he continued cursing in german and russian alike over what he had just read. He had warned the Soviets of a possible attack. That they needed to secure the fronts and not continue to push forward. Had anyone listen to what he had suggested? No. No one at all. Everyone wanted to quickly grab as much as possible, with no regard for the defence or the logistics required behind it.

Operation: Gelbe Star, the codename for taking Hannover was put on hold. Kommendant Baron had ordered for all Volksarmee forces in the region to abbandon their assignments with the Soviets and leave them to deal with their own business as they saw fit.

Their home had just been attacked and they would respond in kind.
He brought up his sidedarm and placed it on the table while ejecting the clip. He began sliding bullets into the clips slowly, while thinking of a possible tactical move.

He placed the clip back into the magslide of the pistol and thought to himself - If the War didn't kill the Soviets for this misstake, he may have too.

He slammed the clip back into place with a hard snap wondering if he had enough bullets to win this war...

A picture of the enemy force grabbed from the forward scouts. Leopard 2's. Always Leopard 2's!
I became the attacker and he is the defender. The lines are drawn.
The enemy is out there and I need to send my scouts into the woods to lay low and report back on enemy formational movement. However, they had run into trouble. He had ordered all units to begin a flanking manouvre from both sides and move against the Leopard 2's. They had bombarded the enemy tanks with shells and managed to knock out one tank. It was a start, but he needed to win this quickly in order to move on.
His tank recieved a critical hit and he felt the head, his driver and gunner lay dead, his left arm hurt and it bled. He quickly opened the hatch and ran as fast as he could away from burning tank. It exploded shortly after. He ran towards the right flank and the closest tank commander opened his hatch and slid down next to the loader. The Kommendant quickly climbed inside and was getting caught up with the stream of information through the internal radio. He was down one platoon.
The carnage from one turn of shooting at the hands of the Leopard 2's
Angered by the loss of a platoon he rusher forward while ordering fire on the right group of Leopard tanks. The left flank would have to wait for aid. To his satisfaction a enemy tank blew up and he saw the other member of the group pop smoke and retreat. If he left the battle or was planning a counter-attack he couldn't tell. He recieved confirmation that the first scout unit had broken through defensive line and would begin scouting and reporting of enemy force movements.
The Kommendant and his unit becomes rewarded after shelling the enemy
He lost two more tanks while moving forward, trying to close the gap between him and the enemy. But it was costing him tanks. He could get new tanks. He just needed to destroy the Leopards. Each enemy tank was worth four of his. Regardless of how much firepower he poured into them, they wouldn't explode. Where they all firing blanks?
To his surprise he was joined by remnants from the platoon he had orginally joined. The surprise was shortlived since it took a direct hit and he saw the crew pop smoke while reversing. It had been a crippeling kill. He could see smoke thick black smoke pouring from the engine. The tank to his left detonated loudly. He was losing tanks quicker now. Had the enemy developed a new type of ammo?
He was screaming over the com-net, kill them. Kill them all! He saw the bright richocets bounce of the enemy tanks harmlessly. No clean kill. They kept closing the distance.
His vehicle recieved a hit and the driver died. Their tank escort blew up as well. They hurriedly moved the dead driver and the platoon commander took the controls and continued driving. He cleaned of the blood from the windshield and left a wind breeze from an open wound in the tanks front panel. They where alive, but only barely. A tank on the left flank caught on fire. This is madness he thought. The enemy won't die.
While trapping the enemy in the forest he ordered the BMP-1 scout unit to pass on ahead and find a scouting area to nestle into and begin Observation of the enemy. He didn't need the Spandrels so ordered them to set up an ambush for any enemy tanks wishing to join this area while he attempted to remove this obstacle.
The T-72M's barreling down towards the Leopard 2's. Still unable to get a kill shoot.
He had two tanks left out of sixteen tanks that he had initially ventured out with. The enemy just wouldn't understand that he was here to unite the two countries. There was no need for this war. But most of all. He was angry with the Soviets for letting this happen in the first place.
He went in with a charge against the enemy, cannons firing as he closed the distance. He recieved confirmation from his reccon elements, they had safely made it through and would begin to exploit the breakthrough.

Storytelling time!

To his surprise the top hatch of the nearest Leopard tank opened up and a man began moving out. He ordered the T-72M's to halt and hold fire. Both tanks came to a halt observing the enemy.
The other hatch now opened and out came the crew members from both tanks standing infront of their tanks.

Kommendant Baron opened his own hatch and left his tank, knowing that the machine gunners would have their infantry gunned down if anything went wrong. He rested his right hand reasuringly on his holster as he approached the enemy.

***

The enemy had been captured and handed over to Command for debrief. They had given up because their ammunition had run out. Before they had engaged his unit, they had a run in with the Soviets and already spent alot of their reserves already. Meaning they where hoping for a quick victory.

He didn't believe in luck, but this time he didn't have a good explination for his...luck.
Mechanized Mot-Schützen troops passed him and began setting up defensive positions expecting a counter attack from the enemy. He had ordered, with the blessing from High Command, to set up defensive strongpoints. It would require more manpower from the fighting units. But it would enable them to defend much stronger if one section was overrun.

A few other Volksarmee Commanders had engaged the enemy. Some where successfull, others not so much. He had sent requests for massive amount of reserves, of which he had been granted. Massive battle where to come in the near future against the Americans. This was his country. This wasn't gonna be like the wars of old where the Americans came in saving the day.

He would show them their error in even attempting this attack.

Conclusion / After action report

This game was very intense, since I was kinda hoping to be able to destroy his Leopard 2s. However, he showed time and time again how resilient these tanks could be as I rarely managed to penetrate. And the few times I did get through I only bailed them and they remounted the next turn.

Tomas is a new opponent whom I never had the pleasure of playing against, he runs a club in the city and I asked to swing by and have a game and told him about the Firestorm Campaign. He will hopefully sign up shortly :)

The game ended in a 6:1 to Volksarmee (Warsaw Pact) since I exited with 3 units as per the mission criteria.
I was hoping for a tank against tank win, but since that suddenly started changing I had to adapt and leave the table going on objectives.
