The initial advance, and subsequently the whole battle, was slowed by the hedgerows East of the city. The attached motor rifle company failed to advance at all after the commander was unable to breach the hedges. On the South flank, 2nd Company advanced and fired on a platoon of Chieftains, earning one kill, and forcing them back over the ridge. To the North 3rd Company pressed down the road and opened fire on the infantry hiding in town.
The smoke gave the enemy armor some cover, but 2nd Company advanced through it anyway laying fire and eliminating the unit, leaving the enemy formation commander exposed. Unfortunately, the smoke also allowed another platoon of Chieftains to close with 2nd company, leaving them in a bad position, with half of their teams bailed out on the other side of the smoke
The attached infantry deployed into town in an attempt to extract the enemy from the buildings. While they were somewhat successful, it was too little too late. 3rd Company had taken position in the plaza, but was taking fire from an anti tank platoon on the ridge to the Northwest. Another platoon of Chieftains arrived and pressed through town towards their position. 1st Company became the target of the enemy tanks from the south and the formation commander was killed in the barrage. Seeing the losses, and anticipating more, it was decided to quit the field and return.
