Firestorm: Red Thunder

This is the second half of a larger battle report where we fought over three areas in our local Firestorm Campaign. In our Campaign we were fighting over Stuttgart but for the online campaign we called it Leipzig....

Lieutenant Johnson was sitting out on the far flank, worried about the number of Soviets reported to be advancing on his position. His platoon was backed up by a flight of Cobras and a Battery of M109s. Some German forces sat to his left flank but he knew they had more than their fair share of enemies to face.

Johnson and his boys knew the Soviets were near but the sound of a flight of Hinds diving on their position still surprised them. Of course the pilots were just as surprised as they saw two of their number swatted from the sky by accurate .50cal fire. They had their revenge as the missiles found an M1 to slow to back in to cover.

Next came the T-72s backed up by BMPs. Cannon Launched Guided Projectiles rained down on them, as TOW missiles streaked across the battlefield followed up by deplete uranium 105mm rounds. Still the Soviets came as what should have been an overwhelming barrage missed more targets than it hit.

The Germans were quickly overwhelmed and destroyed in place but the Soviets had been stopped!

Apparently though no-one told the Soviets this and they had pushed a second company of T-72s and BMPs through the town. The battered US forces were now looking worse for wear with their Cobras shot down or forced to leave the battlefield, the M109s taking fire from enemy tanks, and Johnson's M1 the only one returning enemy fire. Forced to quit the battlefield he called for the M109s to drop a minefield to cover their retreat as they gathered the survivors and pulled back.
