Soviet Beer Run

The soldiers were tired of being on a war footing for so long. Since the mobilization began, weeks of secret deployment was beginning to take a toll on equipment and morale. High Command knew that the southern swing was going to be a crucial part of the overall plan of attack. Local commanders were briefed and then they went on to brief their units until, finally, everyone knew what was about to happen.
The Colonel was very much aware of the morale situation of the men under his command. When it was time to give his final words to the troops, he understood the importance of making them count, especially, when the Political Officer was going to have the last word. Keenly aware of the potential for that last word to be counterproductive, the Colonel had a stroke of genius.
"Comrades! We have been tasked with a very important mission to take the fight into Bavaria. The German population has no idea what is about to happen and, as they lazily continue to make their beer, only the British infantry is there to protect them."
"Comrades, we are marching to Munich. To the heart of Bavaria. To the land of warriors. To the glory of the Motherland and to the best beer Germany has to offer!"
The plan for the push through was simple. While a company of T-72s kept the known British armor in place, the rest of the battalion (2 other companies of T-72, anti-air assets, and mechanized infantry) will race down the highway running from the border town to the village in which the British were known to be. The main objective was to capture and hold Hill 17, just north of the British position. From that hill, our forces would be able to control the transportation infrastructure around Neiderbayern and facilitate a speedy move onto Munich.
The plan worked. The depleted T-72 company (4 tanks) raced ahead and reached the hill before the British were able to react. Following units helped consolidate the position and stall a potential enemy armor counter attack out of the village. Original reports stated that the British armored commander's tank had been destroyed but, apparently, he was able to move to another tank and continue the fight. However, the destruction of that Chieftan allowed us the time needed to defend the hill from attacks coming from enemy reinforcements arriving from the northwest.
The first of the British units to arrive onto the scene was a platoon of Scorpions that proceeded to destroy our infantry transports as they Blitzed in. They were dealt with by tanks from the two T-72 companies in the area around Hill 17 and the infantry's anti-tank weapons. Next came the British helicopters (a flight of 4), which also Blitzed onto the scene and destroyed some of our tanks with their long-range Tow Missiles. Our SAMs were able to knock one of them out of the sky before radio messages from the local radar units reported enemy aircraft (likely Harriers) loitering in the area. Luckily, they never arrived in the battlefield.
The British infantry remained in the village (we dubbed them The Village People), leaving it up to their small armor platoons to attempt to dislodge us from the hill. A second helicopter attack knocked out our Shilkas while avoiding our SAMs. However, the enemy's plan to deal with our tanks from their defensive positions played out in our favor as topography was to our advantage and only a few of our tanks were exposed to their fire.
The British failure to leave their defensive perimeter allowed us to gain and keep the coveted hill. At that point the enemy executed an orderly retreat, leaving the highway to Munich undefended. The next day we were drinking the beer left by the hasty evacuation of the Bavarian city. Or losses were: 5 T-72s, 4 BMP 2s, and 2 Shilkas. The enemy lost 4 miniature tanks, 1 infantry team, 1 helicopter, and 1 battle tank.

Sadly, I am not accustomed to taking pictures but now see the need to do so during the campaign. I’m glad the little story was liked. It was fun to write in that format.

I like your humour, I’ve noticed some players wishing to join your beer push 😉
Your story is simple and easy to read, I would’ve loved some more pictures possibly!
