Battle for the Bahnhof

Hauptmann Gerhard was full of nervous energy as he manoeuvred his T-72M off of the rail transporter, into the town on the edge of Bremen. For weeks he had been sat in reserve, waiting for his moment, his tank wasn’t even dirty.
Over the squeal of his tracks he could just hear the Hind commander’s report of enemy armour approaching. Ordering the Spandels to cover the left flank he and 5 other T-72Ms struck out to the right. He hoped the remaining tanks in his unit would have time to get off of the transport train in time.

My Army:
HQ T-72M
T-72M x 5
T-72M x 5
T-55 x 4
Gopher x 2
Spandrel x 3
Hind x 4
Hind x 2 *
Small Hind Assault Company (mounted on the 2 Hinds)

EDIT: * it has been pointed out to me in the comments that I can only take one unit of up to 4 Hinds. Fortunately they did not come on from Reserve so played no part in this game.

My Opponent’s force:
HQ Leopard 2
Leopard 2 x 2
Leopard 2 x 2
Luchs x 2
Roland Flak x 2

We decided to play the Hasty Attack mission. As I had only built some of my units the day before they were only undercoated. As such they looked far too clean to have driven all the way to Bremen. Therefore they had been transported via train to the station you can see in the bottom centre of the picture above. This was where I placed one of my objectives, the other is behind the factory in the top right. My opponent placed his two objectives on either side of the rail-head. He would later remove the one on the left.

I placed my Spandrels (the models are actually Storms) to cover the left flank. The T-55s were in the centre, my plan for them was to rush forward and go after the Rolands. My commander was hiding behind the house on the right. I had 5 T-72Ms in ambush.

The plan for the T-55 did not survive contact with the enemy, neither did 2 T-55s. My opponent pushed up on my right flank with two Leopards and his commander. After a lucky reserves roll his other two Leopards arrived and covered the centre, parking on top of a hill exactly where I’d planned to send my T-55s.

In my turn I ambushed with my 5 T-72Ms and rolled my commander forwards to get shots at the Leopards on the hill. This is where I made a major error. My Flames of War Soviet trained brain failed to move the tanks forward to get flanking shots off. As a result I only bailed one of his Leopards. My T-72Ms would pay for my mistake and all be burning next turn.

In the centre the two remaining T-55s pushed up and one of them managed to kill a Leopard! After one of them had been shot down by the Rolands, the Hinds fired their missiles at the last one, but failed to hit with a roll of three 1s. This proved not to matter as the remaining Leopard decided to run away. Medals for the T-55 crews!

This was where the dice gods smiled on me. My opponent had pushed his Leopards up to the objective, a move which would win him the game unless I got lucky… I got lucky. My delayed, scattered reserves arrived in exactly the right place and surrounded his poor Leopards. Just in case the East German gunners failed the Hinds flew in to make sure. They were not needed though.

In the following turn I repeated the process with his commander, minus one T-72M which he’d bailed out. The Hinds took out his Luchs and the sole-surviving Roland fled the field.

The one Hind which was shot down, showing off it’s winter camo (undercoat). I had a lot of fun with the helicopters, even though they didn’t achieve a great deal.
It was a good game but I’d been very lucky. My rookie error in the first turn should have cost me the game. Once my reserves did arrive though the game was basically over.

Having looked you’re right about the Hinds. I’ll drop the 2 extra ones and probably add a few more T-55s and some recon.

    Hi Baron,
You might well be right about that, it does ring a bell now you mention it. I’ll double check and change my list if needed… a few more T-55s maybe?
Luckily they never arrived from reserve so had no impact on the above game.

Jadgpanzer, I think my opponent only has these models just now. He’s only just started really so may pick up some other bits later. He was always going to struggle with just 5 tanks.

Nice pics, Leo 2 are a great tank, but a big point sink, maybe get your opponent to try Leo 1’s next time, almost as good of a gun, but a lot cheaper. Well done to the reds this time.

    Concur about the extra Hinds

  • Nabeshin says:

Unlucky on the West Germans, such a force choice was bound to get picked off easily. Good report!

  • Baron says:

Nice report and alot of nice pictures! 😀

However, I have a qusetion for you regarding Volksarmee. I play this army myself and I noticed you have 2 units of Mi-24 Hinds.
I recall that we can at best only have 1 platoon of 4 Mi-24 Hinds :/
Or maybe I missed something in here.

    Cool report. love your table

  • Comrade Stulin says:

Yeah, it was always likely to be a tough fight for the West Germans. The probably needed to hold back a little and snipe me.

The Germans lost way before this game ever started
