Hauptmann Bastian Gehrke crouched behind his Leopard 1 and looked at his commanders crowded around a map on the ground.
“The Leipzig counter-attack has stalled; Headquarters needs a new route of advance. We are to scout to the southeast and take this crossing here.” Points to a bridge on the map. “Aerial recon reports some defenders of the Border Guard, so be ready for anything they may have thrown in with a Kompanie of two of infantry. Luchs teams 3 and 4 will attempt to cross the river to the South a few miles and scout North until contact is made by the main force. I remind you, my friends that we must clear the way for the Americans to cross quickly. Luchs teams 1 and 2 will be with the armor to engage, let us try to get there before dawn.”
A few hours later Bastian peered through his Thermal Imager at the target. The bridge stood on a slight rise above the surrounding terrain; this was an old spur off the more commanding hill to the South before the river separated them. Several buildings clustered on the far side where the bridge road met the major thoroughfare to the East. Between his forces and the target there was a wood where two roads met before heading to the bridge. A small farmhouse stood with several fields separated by hedges and more trees lined the river to the South.
There were troops dug in on his side of the bridge, obviously on guard if not on alert yet. The heat bloom of T-55’s showed on the Southern hill, commanding the area with clear lines of fire from well-concealed firing points. Those might have helped during the day but they couldn’t hide from his sensors at night. Doubtless there were more troops billeted in the buildings and signatures of the expected AA vehicles stood by them.
Luchs Team 1 had found a way to get his armor up into the woods unseen by the enemy and both platoons of Leopard 1’s sat in-line concealed at the wood line. Luchs team 2 had moved to the South keeping hedgerows between them and the enemy, attempting to get close to the river and make contact with his other two Luchs teams that had been on radio silence since he had sent them out South hours ago to ford the river.
His watch beeped 0400 and he keyed his mic, “Priority targets the t-55’s, fire!” Of the twelve rounds fired, seven found targets. Three of the tanks immediately burst into flame with another showing signs of distress. His rounds were reserved for the infantry, searching for the heavier weapons sections but to no avail. Luchs Team 1 swept to the South to link up with Luchs Team 2 who was still working to put the woods between them and the East German main battle tanks.
Alarms sounded and lights came on in the town as the Soviets started to react. Only one T-55 returned fire but his shot hit 50 meters to the rear. They had stayed out of range of the standard infantry Ant-Tank weapons, but an AT-4 Spigot was stationed at the bridge as well. The control wires caught in the branches of trees just in front of his command tank and the missile exploded less than 10 meters from his glacis. More rocket fire erupted from the Northern woods causing Leopard Alpha 2 to explode and another’s crew to bail out.
When the tank did not immediately explode he saw the crew of Alpha 3 remount. “Alpha Team, engage those launchers, Bravo finish the tanks. Luchs 1 and 2 engage the infantry, FIND THAT SPIGOT!!”
Alpha team’s fire to the North was rewarded with two explosions while Bravo team put two hits on each surviving T-55 taking them out of the fight. Luchs 1 and 2 as well as the Hauptmann took the infantry under fire, searching for the heavy Anti-tank weapon, two fighting positions were destroyed but the Spigot survived. “BACK! BACK!” All but Bravo 1 lurched backwards, putting woods between them and the deadly rocket launcher.
The remaining Spandrel and the Spigot concentrated fire on the luckless Bravo 1 and destroyed it, but could do little else for lack of targets. The Spandrel backed out of sight through the trees
“Forward, around the woods. All target the infantry, watch the range, and don’t give them more shots at you.” The tanks moved on-line and edged closer while pouring fire into the platoon. Three more positions, including the AT-4 disappeared. Luchs Teams 1 and 2 also moved in a bit and engaged the BTR-60 transports, killing 2.
Luch Teams 3 and 4 arrived on the far side of the river, moved along the road and engaged the enemy. Team 3 killed another two BTR’s from the second platoon and Team 4 claimed a Gaskin.
On the East German side, the remaining Spandrel decided it was time to leave and departed the field. The First Kompanie’ s BTR’s returned fire on Luchs team 1 to no effect but the second Kompanie’ s BTR’s scored a solid hit on Luchs Team 3A and bailed 3B.
Luchs 3B refused to remount but did not retreat as Luchs Team 4 killed three of the BTR’s that had come out of the town. Luchs Teams 1 and 2 finished off the BTR’s from the first Kompanie as the Leopard consolidated fire on the remaining 4 infantry teams, killing two. The front soviet Infantry Kompanie ceased to matter as hands rose and men started to surrender.
The last remaining Soviet BTR was joined by the HQ BTR as they retreated to the buildings and fired from concealment, killing Luchs 3B.
Time was now on their side as the Hauptmann ordered his armor to take up shelling positions on the bank. They engaged the remaining vehicles killing the two BTR’s and remaining Gaskins. Luchs Teams 1, 2 and 4 moved to be able to engage the remaining HQ and Kompanie from maximum range, blowing holes into the buildings but not causing any damage yet
The Soviet Commander, his mobile assets destroyed and his remaining men surrounded, called to surrender.

0700 - Hauptmann Gehrke sat in the commander’s “office” in house overlooking the bridge, sipping on a cup of hot coffee as he watched American tanks and support vehicles cross the bridge. The phone rang on the desk “Yes sir. Northern breakthrough at the Ruhr? All possible forces? We’ll be enroute in two hours sir.” He dropped the phone on the receiver and stood up, gulping the rest of the cup down.
“ORDERS!!!!!”
