Maj. R. Sharpe ( Proper Bastard ) , Irish Guards, was given his role in a 2 brigade size counter attack from the Hanover area north into the southern flank of advancing Warpac forces. NATO forces needed to slow down the advance desperately. His battlegroup was on the left flank of the advance and had a chunk of urban area in it from the city of Gerten. Sharpe had been given 2 troops of Chieftans from the 17/21st Lancers as support. All the rest was organic support.
We chose to use the Bremen breakthrough as Nato won the attack role and was attacking into Bremen. The idea was to get some much needed vp's and retake some territory too.
Over the course of several turns British shooting and morale were fairly abysmal. Apparently no tea before the attack. Sharpe was with the infantry platoon in the woods on the objective. They were focused on 7, maybe 6, T55s and 4 BMP 1s advancing towards his position. Unfortunately the Milan gunners hadn't done something correctly and didn't kill enough. A Scorpion troop was able to help by putting flank shots into the T55 driving some off. Unfortunately the infantry hadn't ever had time to dig in and the Milans soon were soon unable to fire as the targets were to close. They endured all sorts of mg fire slowly losing members of the platoon before finally digging in. By turn 5 only the light mortar, 2 Milans and Sharpe were left. They had endured artillery and so much mg fire there were probably no trees left. All these troops could do was hug the ground and hope. In the town Sharpes guys were merely holding although 3 Chieftans and the MCT's moved across to help out. Especially since 4 Scorpions and 3 Chieftans had been destroyed. Well, the tanks decided they did not prefer death or glory and fled after one was destroyed and one crew was shaken. That made Sharpe quite angry.
Not much was going on in the town other than artillery and mortars and Milans shooting at dug in East Germans who learned to appreciate good solid Western construction. Some T72s tried to come forward but were met with a hail of missile fire taking out 4 of 5. 4 ZSUs also met this same fate. The British FV 432s got a lottle froggy and 13 managed to get blown up by RPGs and BMP2s.
Meanwhile by the other objective 7 T55s had come in from reserve but decided to mostly hide once Chieftans started to shoot at them, even though most shots were going wide of the mark. At least the last 3 tanks stayed and did more by deterring the reserve tanks than either group did by gunfire.
Finally, Sharpe had only one operable T55 facing him and the Abbots fired a repeat finding a weak spot in the armor bailing out the crew.
Since I had started the turn with a team within 4 inches of the objective and there was nothing live within 8 inches, thanks to the Abbots, the game was over.
I wish I could describe how close this game really was, after turn 3 and awful rolling I was ready to pack it in. Taylor played a great game and had me on the ropes for most of it. It came down the Abbots and him rolling a 1 for an armor save.
On our board I was able to retake Bremen and South Hamburg sectors giving me some extra vp's.
Congrats on the victory!
Very nice report! Great win for the British!
very nice report 🙂 Congrats on the win!
Nice report, great looking table
A much needed win in a key area, well done Major Sharpe. Please report to the briefing room.
Great board and even better out come!
Great job on the battle report – fun table. I’m enjoying seeing the creativity going into some of the games. Pity about the outcome, but I guess we can’t win ’em all! 😀
It doesn’t matter who wins, as long as NATO holds der Gloryhole. Good job.
Great AAR. Hats off to Mr. Sharpe on a outstanding victory. Keep up the good work at the front.
A very nice AAR. Love the table setup as well.
