Oberst Hunts
VS Warsaw Pact

It was a clear morning outside of Frankfurt and the 142nd Panzergrenadiers were poised to launch a quick counterattack against the Warsaw Pact invasion of German sovereign territory. A small force was thrown together in hopes of stopping the advance while additional forces could be mustered to plug the breach. Lead elements of the PzGrenBtl (142) 342 from Koblenz were ordered to attack immediately to grab the key terrain just outside of town to prevent the enemy from getting Frankfurt. We would get additional forces from another company of the battalion once we arrived in position. it was odd to have two commanders for such a small unit and they disagreed about the orders received. Our commander believed that we were to attack immediately and also grab the key terrain and Bravo companies' CO thought that we were to immediately attack to seize the key terrain. Time would prove our commander to be wrong in his interpretation of the orders and would cost us a decisive battle we could not afford to lose. Such is the fog of war.

The battlefield was a small area (4'x4') just east of Frankfurt that allowed for good fields of fire and maneuver.
The German reconnaissance units pushed out early to secure additional ground for the mech units to deploy on.
The entire German force pushes forward to prepare to engange the enemy advance on Frankfurt.
The Warsaw Pact forces have advanced much farther than expected and are poised to jump on the key terain to the front of the German forces.
(turn 1) Clearly we needed a plan to flank the Soviets and cut down their forces before they could reach the city of Frankfurt. The plan was to whittle down their forces and cause them to retreat back across the river.
The soviets rushed forward to grab the key terrain while our German forces maneuvered to cut them down from the rear. Our Jaguars, Gepards and Luchs recon vehicles pushed up and began tearing into the enemy forces. Our mech forces held in place to wait for the lead enemy forces to be softened up and put to ground. That plan would prove to be our downfall.
The return fire from BMP-2s, RPGs, and AGSs tore into our Gepards and almost caused them to withdraw, but the commander was too hard core and held his ground. Unfortunately the enemy now held the key terrain and our commander failed to realize that if he did not get forces on the terrain immediately all would be lost.
While our forces continued to manuever on the enemy and kept cutting down his forces, the Luftwaffe came in and dropped a Salvo strike on the enemies lead BMP forces and took a significant toll on those forces even after losing 75% of their flight. Alas, while our higher command continued to think there was plenty of time to get to the key terrain the enemy was already there, even though they were all pinned.
And then it was over. Make sure you read the correct scenario victory conditions.

I’m happy to hear that you are all having a good sport about it though! 🙂
Very nice armies both of you!

Chin up, Oberst. Use this folly to strengthen your next attack 😉

As do I. Shall we say in two weeks or so. I can start reading the scenario now to make sure I get the victory conditions right by then. Have a good trip.

I was so crushing him right up to the end. I can’t begin to tell you how stupid I felt. He was very kind about it all. We will play again and I will not blunder next time. I think that even though we tried to adjust the table for 4×4 after seeing the new scenarios I can see that we needed to stretch it out a bit more. I will now go flog myself.

    What did you play with?

And i think we all been there, missed to read the objective 🙂
