Deployment

The Soviet attack.

With the NATO forces in Salzburg overrun, my small Panzer Kompanie of five Leopard 2 tanks was taken off the line at Neiderbayern and sent south from Munich to secure our flank. Sure enough, we arrived just in time to meet an exploitation force of T-72 tanks attempting to envelope us.

Traffic jam on the Southern roads.

The Leopards arrived on the battlefield to find a dozen Soviet tanks opposite them. Huddled together, they crept through the small village hoping to grab every piece of cover they could find. Soon enough they would be able to spring forward and engage the enemy.

Turn 1

The Soviet tankers spotted the Leopards moving through the town and immediately split their forces. One company veered towards the farmland, looking to secure the objectives, while another tried to press forward through a small wood in order to strike at the West Germans. Tracks were thrown and wheels spun as three of the seven tanks bogged down at the edge of the wood. With only half the company brought to bear the Soviet's opening volley did little to dissuade the West Germans.

First blood.

Having weathered the incoming fire, the Leopard 2 tanks put their superior speed to good use and charged forward. Spreading out of the village and laying fire into the floundering T-72s, they were rewarded with two fountains of flame and the panicked cries of Soviet crewmen.

Turn 2

Snake eyes.

It just so happened that one of the destroyed tanks had belonged to the Soviet Battalion Commander, who had perished in the blaze. With this loss added to the destruction of their tanks, and some of the tracks still stuck in the brush, the rest of the company abandoned their vehicles and fled.
It seemed that Luck was with the West Germans.

Nevertheless, the second T-72 company was still in the fight. Rounding towards the central objective they unleashed some fire on the advancing Leopard 2 tanks. One tank scored a direct hit against a Leopard who was only saved by thick frontal armour paired with the long range of the attack.

The West German pressed forward, refusing to give up ground. One platoon raced down the road to a flanking position and opened fire on the T-72 they found near the crossroads. The cover of the nearby wood allowed it to duck out of harms way.
Meanwhile, the rest of the company exchanged shots with the Soviet forces in the farm, knocking out one tank and forcing another crew to bail out.

Turn 3

The sole survivor flees the battlefield.

As the battle wore on, the flanking Leopards pushed through the central woods to strike at the remaining Soviet tanks. But it was long range shooting from the second platoon and the Company Commander that sealed the enemy's fate.
Once again, morale was not with the Soviet force. Having suffered severe casualties, the last few survivors retreated, leaving behind the burning wrecks that once made up their exploitation force.

In pure tank on tank action the T-72 struggles and NATO tanks shine.

Especially the Leo II, against the Abrams there is always a 50/50 chance of an armour save.

    Nice report.

Not sure, to be honest. This is only my second actual game of Team Yankee. This campaign has been my excuse to finally play some games.

I think the BRDMs would have been annoying. They could’ve simply rushed the further objectives and forced me to split fire to stop that capture. Storms would’ve provided more shots, slightly more effective when they hit, but it was a difficulty to hit my troops (usually 6’s to hit) that kept them alive not their armour.
I definitely would’ve had a tougher fight on my hands, more targets to kill and more shots to try and avoid.

Good report, how do you think it would have worked out with 3xSturm and 4xBRDM in place of 1xT72? Or did you have an agreement just to use tanks?

  • Nabeshin says:

YES! Nothing is more exciting than seeing Leo 2s doing what they’re built to do. A good report!

  • Sean at Battlefront says:

Yes, I’ve been thinking my Platoon commanders could do with some decals, at the very least.

  • M. Nisbet says:

Excellent report, but wouldn’t expect less from a Staffer. Next job is reward your men with some colour, they deserve it.

  • Pelikanen says:

    Nice report and great win!

At 55 points, I barely scraped in with a legal list. But if we were to jump up to 60 I’d add my Luchs back in, for some early objective threat, which might draw some fire away from the big guns.

Those Leopards are tough. Any recommendations for list changes if you were to try again?
