Counterattack at Leipzig

In our second big game at Pete's house was played on the same table as our first game, but this time we played across the short distance (5 foot / 1.5m) with myself (Wayne), Pete and Aaron playing the Soviets and Andrew and Chris fielding West Germans and Americans. I took my usual T-72 Tank Battalion and faced a mixed force on the left flank of Americans and West Germans. Some of the West Germans were even my models under the control of Andrew.
Pete took the centre and Aaron was on the right. Both Andrew and Chris control their side of the battlefield evenly, so in my sector I faced both Andrew and Chris.

With my force deployed on the left I pushed my BMP-2 Motor Rifle Company and one T-72 Tank Company up through the town towards the objective positioned on the road leading out of the town. My Gophers hung back to cover them from behind the town.
on my right I pushed my second T-72 Tank Company, HQ, BMP-2 Scouts and Shilkas into a cornfield using the scout's Spearhead.

Once the game got underway I pushed through the town, but managed to bog down a few T-72s and BMP-2, which slowed my progress. I was given control of a company of Pete's Hinds and used them to attack Chris's M1 Abrams positioned in a wood to the right rear of the town, killing one in the first attack, but losing two Hinds to AA fire from .50 cals and Gepards.
On my right the T-72s engaged Andrew's one Zug of Leopard 2s reinforcing Chris, where I managed to knockout one.

The return fire from the Cobras, M1 Abrams and Leopard 2s started to take its toll. My right T-72 Tank Company was quickly reduced to a small number and it was up to the missiles on the BMP-2 Scouts to even thing out. In the town my other T-72 and BMP-2 Motor Rifle companies struggled through the close terrain eventually closing in on the town centre.

Chris dropped some minefields in the town with his M109 SP howitzers. Andrew was under pressure from Pete in the centre and his attention was directed there, so I had less fire coming from the right, but I still had to deal with his two remaining Leopard 2s. I eventually knocked one out with a BMP-2 Spandrel ATGM and forced a Last Stand test which Andrew failed. The Hinds and BMP-2 Scouts eventually also finished off Chris's M1 Abrams, where he was down to two killed and one bailed out. He also failed his Last Stand test for them.

With only one Hind left, but its morale holding, the brave pilot flew over to attack the M109s and destroyed one with a missile. Three T-72s pushed through the mines, one was bailed out, but two got through and on to the objective where they engaged the M109s. The BMP-2 Scouts finished off the last of Andrew's West Germans by taking out some bold Luchs who made a last ditch attack on them.

The day was getting late and we called the game. Andrew's West German had been broken, but Chris still had a some of his Americans fighting.
