It was a fine Bavarian afternoon as the 142nd PzGrenK deployed along the banks of the Saale river to protect a key bridge from falling into enemy hands. The commander sent out our two Recce platoons to scout ahead and pick some extended positions for our troops to move into once we were in location along the river. There was a problem with this location since there was only one bridge, and the river, which split our forces in two was impassible except for over the bridge which seemed to ranged in by enemy artillery. We would have to find a way to protect our far left flank from envelopment while pushing forces forward to protect the bridge on our right flank. This deployment could prove to be difficult if we could not maneuver along internal lines to mutually support our forces. So, we rapidly moved into positions on both sides of the river with our mechanized platoons digging in to hold the bridge at all cost. This days events would prove to be very costly.

We rapidly deployed into our defensive positions to protect and hold the bridge.
Thankfully there were houses and barns to deploy oour mech platoons in and plenty of space for our Marders to cover the front avenues of approach.
The enemy deployed across the far farm fields and wooded area and seemed to be understrength as if he was waiting for additional forces to come from reserve somewhere.
We could see enemy tanks to our front and they moved slightly to their left to tuck in behind a house but yetwere still able to bring fire on our forces.
Enemy tanks opened up on our Marders and their AAA guns sprayed our southern Recce platoon while artillery rained down on our Jaguar platoon. Our vehicles seemed to be exploding everywhere and there was no relief.
It was at that point that the Luftwafe showed up and dropped a salvo on the enemy tanks and AT vehicles. Score one for the Luftwafe. They killed two tanks and a third ran away never to be seen again. Our forces shifted a little and Milan missils were flying all across the front. Our Jaguars scored two long range shots and killed the enemy Fist team and destroyed one SP Arty vehicle. This were starting to look like we could carry the day and it had only been 10 minutes. (end turn one)
SP arty does not hold up well against HOT missiles.
Even though we seemed to be punishing the enemy we were still taking loses.
Enemy guns opened up on our Recce platoon again and destroyed another Luchs. More brave recce soldiers sent to heaven without a chance to even the score.
Once again artillery rained down on our Jaguars, taking out another one and forcing the last team to head to the rear for repairs. At this time our Gepards moved across the river to bolster the defense on the far side. A bold move we hoped would not meet with destruction.
Our Milan teams finally get the range of the enemy AT vehicles and kill one and bail one of them. (end turn two)
The enemy brought in a unit of infantry on the left flank and thankfully we were ready for them. We had a full mech platoon with Marders and a recce platoon ready to engage them.
The enemy opened up on our Roland platoon and then assaulted them. That was bad for the Rolands but good for our recce and mech platoons. Our return fire killed one enemy infantry and bailed a 113. (end of turn three)
The enemy Hamerheads continue to pound our infantry positions but they continue to hold.
A second enemy infanrty platoon arrives on the left flank and continue to battle with our recce and mech forces.
After the Luftwafe and our infantry continue to pound the enemy we seem to be holding onthe left and on the right.
The battle for the left continued to sway back and forth and the enemy tried to flank our mech unit but the fire from our forces was too much for them and halted them in their tracks.
Our front mech platoon pushed forward and attacked and assaulted the enemy company commander and killed him. They wer planning to push frther forward to take on the single enemy Hammerhead but it failed its motivation and ran home.
On the right the enemy pushed forward its AT platoon to get a hold on the bridge. If they hold the battle will continue with even more destruction.
It was now or never for our right infantry platoon to step up and stop the enemy pushing for the bridge. Our infantry pushed up and fired away to now availe. It was down to the assault and the infantry finally came through with two panzerfaust shoots to destroy both ebemy vehicles. Finally we achieved victory.
