Mission: Bridgehead - 50 pts

American vs Warsaw (Polish)

Had enough time to get some small quick games in. The Americans are moving into Leipzig and the Polish forces are relatively unprepared in some positions. The Americans have stumbled upon a Polish Mechanized Battalion. The Polish must hold their ground.

Anna Company (Red) and Boris Company (Blue) and Commander Sokoboski (Yellow) defend a supply shipment.

The Story

Commander Sokoboski received intel of NATO forces breaking through the Czech lines and some forward Polish Battalions. However lacking much in the means of night fighting equipment and having just received a supply from an Mi-26 rerouted to supply surrounding Warsaw Pact forces in perhaps a feeble attempt to bolster an ammunition supply for the up coming battles.

"How do they expect us to defend their southern flanks with such equipment!" Sokoboski scoffed. "We are sitting ducks, with hand-me-downs about to face a full invasion by the Americans..." interrupted by a soldier

"Sir, we have lost communications with the front. The Americans are headed this way. What are your orders?"

"Set up positions around the Mi-26, we must defend this LZ until we are relieved, and get those BMPs to the front!"

"Tak, jest!"

Sokoboski contemplated his options, but even if he fell back the Americans would be hot on his heels and cut his forces down. Defending this position would give more battalions to regroup, even if that meant sacrificing his battalion to be a temporary speed bump.

Objective

Sokoboski mobilizes his troops to protect the Mi-26 and take up defensive positions. The Americans are trying to seize the Mi-26 and destroy it.

Turn 1 Nato - Zero Hour

Captain Parker and his company of under-strength Abrams Companies push together trying to wrap around a formation of Polish forces located by aerial recon.

The eager Lieutenant Lyons attempted to keep up with the Abrams, however falling short of being fast enough to avoid cover, however noticing the lack of speed he tries to take cover behind a patch of trees.

Americans move up the right flank.

Turn 1 Soviets - Patience

Sokobosky orders his men to stay put and only open fire when the enemy is in sights. A few BMP-2s have views on scout platoon and open fire. A score of hits on the M113s as they explode in a fireball.

First blood for the Polish.

The ITV and M113 were not as concealed as they had hoped and it cost them their lives.
The BMPs move to ambush the Americans from the forest and blitz.

Turn 2 NATO - Shock and Awe

The Americans line up to engage the BMPs. Five BMPs are knocked out from the incoming fire.

Turn 2 Soviets - Retaliation

The remaining BMP-2s in the forest manage to knock out an Abrams.
The BMPs are close to the forest from a blitz last turn, they go for another blitz move and succeed.
With a blitz and no bogs to stop the BMPs they spring the trap and ambush the Abrams.

Turn 3 NATO - Thin the ranks

The Americans rally and advance for better shots on the BMPs. Having taken several ATGMs to their tanks, most of their sights are damaged or destroyed reducing their accuracy greatly. (2 of 6 shots hit, and only 1 BMP destroyed, another bailed)

Turn 3 Soviets - Destroy them before they can report our numbers!

Soviets succeed in another blitz order and take up positions to wipe the Americans out.

The carnage after the Storm

Sokoboski looked around, his senses were overwhelmed. There were soldiers running around trying to tend to their comrades both alive and dead. Walking further he gazed upon the carnage of the engagement between the BMPs and the Americans. Shredded machine and man alike, it would have been hard to identify what either object was. One soldier shouted and pointed at the trees above, the commander of one of the BMPs had been ejected about 7 meters and was wrapped around a tree branch. He knew these men well, they were fearless, he would die for them and they for him but a sight such as this churned his stomach as he felt responsible for each death. The moans and screams of the wounded pieced the air and the smell of burnt flesh lingered, the smell of death. This, he thought, could not be the feeling of victory...if so they have lied to us about it's amazing feeling, something to tell young boys to join an old man's war. He shook his head is grief for both his comrades and the Americans, for he too knew they were fighting to defend what they believe and the feeling of fighting a foreign war.

A soldier jogged up to Sokoboski giving a quick salute " Comrade Major, we have the final reports of the casualties. The Americans have been wiped out and we have captured three of the crew inside of a tank. Our casualties were twenty-three KIA, forty-seven wounded and we have lost seven BMP-2s. Our casualties were relatively low compared to the spineless Americans, eh Major?." The Soldier chuckled a bit.

"Thank you, comrade." Sokoboski said with disapproveal of the soldier's comments. "Load the seriously wounded on the Mi-26, and those that can fight, have them prepare for a counter attack. We are not done here."

Sokoboski did not want to put these men's lives at further risk if he didn't have to, but he knew if he did not push the American soon while they had the element of surprise the blood of those would die from his inaction would be on his hands.

After game comments

50 points was rather small and my opponent without infantry had little choices for an attack plan. However it was a good fight and he tried to take out my BMPs for the victory point, we almost had a larger battle where he would have reinforcements coming in acting as the larger spearhead force but we wanted to see how this would play out first.

NATO player may have had “no chance” but cant fault the winner for the other guys list selection.

    Love the tiny mission

    Interesting battle and looked fun.

A nice AAR, love the 6mm minis! Congrats on the win Comrade!

  • fingolfen says:

Congratulations on the win! I tend to agree that the US has the least options at this point, but honestly I’ve seen things go sideways fast when Abrams are involved…

  • Baron says:

    Congrats commander on the win!

Well done on operation RED PINK

The NATO tanks are powerful, but no match for our numbers and determination.

    Nice report, like the graphics

  • Nabeshin says:

I’m really starting to warm up to 6mm, good report.

  • Jagdpanzer says:

Ahhh OK, yeah the movement scale makes sense then, otherwise I couldn’t work out how they moved or shot that far. Lol well they look good well done

  • Vladimir Orlovsky says:

These are 6mm, we got a big old collection of them. I only recently figured to put infantry on the BF small bases as “medium” bases and pennies for the small bases. He doesn’t want to do that and I don’t want to paint NATO so there is the no infantry dilemma for his tactics. I’d love to play 15mm Team Yankee but I’m a broke college student and we all agreed to do 6mm Team Yankee so it wouldn’t break the bank.

  • Vladimir Orlovsky says:

Yes, I feel the Americans are extremely underwhelming currently (I want to do a Marine detachment myself, don’t tell anyone). I’m trying to get him to understand the value of combined arms, but who wants to listen to a sneaky soviet player. If he brought mortars I’d be toast…

  • Jagdpanzer says:

Oh are these 15mm or 6mm figure

  • Jagdpanzer says:

Ok it looked from the pics they moved through the Forrest and then shot in the one turn

  • Jagdpanzer says:

But your new infantry look very nice and that big helo is excellent

  • Jagdpanzer says:

Hmm OK, I think the US are very limited until the new book comes out. I guess as a bit of an old hand as a NATO player I can see how extremely difficult your friend was going to find this battle. Hopefully he can play with some infantry or helos next time, or arty.

  • Vladimir Orlovsky says:

Blitz commands, 4″ move without movement penalty encured. I just so happened to roll a whole lot of 6s and 5s for the checks.

  • Jagdpanzer says:

How did the BMP move and shoot their missiles

  • Vladimir Orlovsky says:

I wanted to bring infantry because I just finished them this afternoon, and had I remembered where I put my aircraft stand I would have brought helos so he could test out his VADs.

  • Vladimir Orlovsky says:

He has a tank killer list and he chose it after I told him what I was bringing so… mostly Abrams and M901s. I’m trying to get the lists up with PDF, but it’s freaking out. Give me a few minutes.

  • Jagdpanzer says:

Congrats on the win, but with that US list vs your soviet list, the NATO player had no chance. Could he bit have used some other figures as fill ins? What mission did you use? Do you have lists?
