With the recent Warsaw Pact breakthroughs in the north, the Hellenic 21st Armoured Brigade had not yet been able to make a proper attempt to make a difference having been swept up in the retreat west.
The Greeks finally found an opportunity to make an attempt to break one of the flanks of the surrounded Frankfurt. An East German battalion held a small town on the outskirts, it was time to liberate the town.
As soon as the Hellenics arrived on the scene, they were quickly boxed in by an East German infantry battalion, their RPGs would prove to be their downfall.
The Hellenics started off with some strong fire, taking down some T-72Ms and a small amount of infantry. A CAS strike managed more kills but an assault on the North Eastern flank found insanely accurate AK fire halted the attack of 1st Platoon with the infantry company commander.
A BMP ambush with severe accuracy smashed the effectiveness of the Leopard 1s. Each platoon taking horrific hits and testing the Greek mettle. They were not found wanting, each platoon commander managed to keep their men in check and the return fire annihilated the BMPs. But the medium tank company was facing dire straits and their combat effectiveness was very concerning.
The 109s continued hitting the Northern infantry company with minimal results with blazing gepard fire as the 2nd Infantry platoon on the Western flank continued firing MGs and grenades into the West EG infantry company.
Jaguars changed targets a few times from spandrels to T-72Ms in an attempt to stem the tide, with varied results. Most of the BMPs and light support of the East Germans were being smashed but their AA was luckily out of sight from the Greek ATGMs and 105s.
East German reserves began arriving, Shilkas and Hinds made themselves known as the flank by 2 sections of Luchs recce was quickly eliminated.
2nd Infantry platoon managed to quickly eliminate the EG Western infantry company in a brutal assault with their accompanying M113s firing their MGs with blistering accuracy.
The 2nd infantry continued their assault into the centre of town before killing the East Germany infantry battalion commander. Their final stand under combined shilka, Hind and MG fire ended with their last four men surrendered.
The last of the Hellenics fought to the last man as the other T-72M company smashed the Leopard company and it's support. Only one Gepard, M109 and Jaguar left the field.
These survivors were to be pulled off the line but volunteered to merge into their fellow companies to get revenge. The Greek 21st Armoured Brigade will conduct another counterattack elsewhere to keep the Warsaw Pact on it's toes.
Kaliméra, commander! A good effort from our Greek allies, hopefully this baptism of fire will give you some tactical insights and deliver wins in future.
Very nice report mate 🙂
I wonder how the Royal Hellenic Army is faring in Greece with their only modern armored brigade still in Germany!
“A BMP ambush with severe accuracy”
That was me rolling nine 5’s from ten dice.
We started taking pics early on the forgot about it as the shop was nearing closing time and we rushed it a bit.
Yes thanks for the story, good report
Unlucky on the loss, but good job on the report! A little turn header for each turn might help the flow a bit!
Nice report. Thanks for making the extra effort!
